Fruehlings Erwachen (Spring Awakening)

was a surprise hit on Broadway in the 2006 Season. It’s german language premiere took place at the Ronacher Theatre, Wien in March of 2009.

“Fruehlings Erwachen” is a re-telling of Franz Wedekind’s landmark play of the same name. Originally banned from performance because of it’s frank and uncompromising look at the 'coming of age' of adolescents, it’s subject matter is as pertinent today as when written. The creators, Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, challenged the traditional forms of musical theatre by adding songs for the actors to comment on the action. This originality is followed through in all aspects of the production, directed by Michael Mayer.
